Specimen Required
Collect

One 5 mL gold (SST) top tube.

Transport

1 mL serum 2-8ºC.

Remarks

Specimen should be collected between 6 and 10 am.

Stability

Ambient: 24 hours; Refrigerated: 1 week (3 days in contact with separator gel); Frozen: storage is not recommended

Billing Code 1010468
CPTCode 84403 Total Testosterone; 84270 SHBG
Notes

The test is suggested for women and children due to the improved sensitivity of LC/MS/MS analysis of testosterone.

The concentration of free testosterone is derived from a mathematical expression based on the constants for the binding of testosterone to sex hormone binding globulin and albumin.

Results of the SHBG component of this test may be falsely decreased in patients taking over-the-counter biotin supplements.
