To All Clients of Laboratory Alliance: Transition from BNP to NT-proBNP

RE:               Transition from BNP to NT-proBNP

We are transitioning from the BNP test to NT-proBNP as the primary natriuretic peptide test at our Operations Center.  The clinical utility of the natriuretic peptides BNP and NT-proBNP is similar; however, NT-proBNP testing offers several advantages over BNP testing.  Our hospital laboratories at both Crouse Hospital and St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center have also made this transition.  NT-proBNP has been reported to be superior to BNP for patients taking Entresto® and is also more stable than BNP in patient samples.  This allows for adding NT-proBNP testing onto previously collected samples.  In addition, the transition will add operational efficiencies to our laboratory staff.

NT-proBNP is available daily at the Operations Center, with stat requests available with turn-around time (TAT) under 1 hour from receipt in the lab.  The specimen type is serum, collected in a gold top tube or lithium heparin plasma.  Other chemistry tests can be performed from the same tube, eliminating the need for a unique tube for the natriuretic peptide testing as is the case for BNP (lavender top tube).

As of August 21, 2017, BNP will no longer be available to order through client interfaces.  However, if needed, BNP may be ordered via manual processes with testing sent to an alternate Laboratory Alliance site for analysis.

The chart below compares the two natriuretic peptide test details.
