Specimen Required
Collect

One gray (Vacutainer) tube (4 mL full) or sterile container. Glass jars that have been sterilized are acceptable, but not ideal.

Transport

One 4 mL gray top tube or minimum of 2 mL urine in sterile container at 20-25°C.

Remarks

This test is for pediatric use only. Urine gram stains are performed on pediatric patients 10 years of age and younger.

Stability

Unpreserved: Up to 2 hours at room temperature; up to 24 hours at 2-8°C. Preserved: Up to 48 hours at room temperature or 2-8°C.

Unacceptable Conditions

Specimens that exceed stability, are received in non-sterile containers, and any containers used with preservatives for urinalysis. Plastic containers, including medicine vials, are not acceptable.
