Update to Order Codes for Timed Cortisol Collections
Tuesday, May 1, 2018
Timed cortisol levels may be requested as part of stimulation or suppression tests. Administration of a drug to stimulate or suppress cortisol secretion is performed in the hospital or provider’s office. A baseline cortisol level is collected prior to the administration of the drug and then additional samples are collected at desired 30-minute intervals. Effective May 15, 2018, individual order codes for random or timed cortisol collection will be available to all hospital and non-hospital providers. When requesting cortisol levels at timed intervals, please select a specific order code that corresponds to the collection intervals required per the chart below. Collect times noted on requisition and/or samples should be consistent with the timed collections requested.
No changes to sample type or specimen collection are required. Random cortisols will continue to be reported with reference intervals for morning and evening specimens. Timed cortisols will be reported without an associated reference interval as is the current practice.
