Method Change for Prostate Specific Antigen (Total and Free) Assays

Tuesday, January 30, 2018

Laboratory Alliance of Central New York currently uses the Beckman Coulter Access DXI chemiluminescence immunoassay method for analysis of total PSA and free PSA.  Effective February 13, 2018, we will begin performing these analyses using the Siemens Vista LOCI® method.  From the validation studies that have been performed in preparation for this transition, we do not anticipate significant differences in results between the old method and the new method.  However, for a period of 3 months, results of both methods will be reported for each PSA request received so that providers can preview results from the new method for comparison and re-baseline patients.  This is applicable to all PSA order codes and batteries.  Beginning May 15, 2018, only results from the new method will be reported.

No changes to order codes or specimen collection will be required.  Results from the Vista assay will appear on the patients report designated as “NEW METHOD”.   Interpretive comments appended to results from both old and new assays will further explain which method was used.  Reference ranges remain the same.
