Discontinuation of the APT Stool for Fetal Hemoglobin Test
Friday, September 1, 2017
Effective September 25th, 2017, the Hematology Department of Laboratory Alliance of Central New York will no longer offer the APT stool (diaper) test for fetal hemoglobin.
This decision was based on the infrequency of test utilization. For each of the last several years, there have been only one or two tests ordered.
Should there be a need to order the APT test, it can still be ordered from our reference laboratory, ARUP Labs. Testing by ARUP is performed daily on gastric aspirate or stool with visible fresh red blood, with a one mL volume requirement. Stability is: 48 hours if ambient, 72 hours if refrigerated, and a frozen specimen is unacceptable.
