SurePath Pap Smear

Labeled SurePath vial with the end of the sampling device and patient specimen in the fixative.

Unlabeled/mislabeled

Rejected if sampling device is not present in vial.

Conventional Pap Smear

1 slide pap smear, labeled in pencil, collected with cervix brush, cytobrush or spatula, mono-layer smear fixed with 95% ETOH or spray fix.

Unlabeled, mislabeled, air-dried or formalin fixation.

Thin Prep Pap Smear

Labeled thin prep vial, collected by cervix brush or cytobrush/spatula – rinse collection device well in fixative.

Unlabeled/mislabeled

Breast Discharge Smear

Allow a pea-size drop to accumulate on nipple. Place a pencil-labeled glass slide on nipple and slide across quickly. Fix immediately with 95% ETOH or spray fix.

Air-dried specimen, formalin fixation.

Bronchial Wash

Fresh washing, submitted in leak-proof labeled specimen container.  Should be refrigerated if collected outside of lab operation hours.

 

Brushings (Bronchial, Gastric, Esophageal, etc.)

Roll brush on slide labeled in pencil.  Fix immediately in 95% ETOH.

Air-dried specimen, formalin fixation.

CSF

At least 1 ml. in labeled leak-proof container.  Refrigerate if collected outside of lab hours.

 

Fine Needle Aspiration

Aspirates are submitted fixed in Saccomanno fixative.

 

Serous Fluids:

Ascites, Pleural, Pericardial

Submit in labeled, leak-proof container (90 ml. Specimen cup).  Refrigerate in off hours.  More than 5 ml. Preferred.

 

Sputum

Deep cough specimen collected before breakfast.  Induced sputa may be collected any time if the patient has not eaten.  Specimen container must be labeled.

If pulmonary macrophages are not identified – the specimen will be reported as unsatisfactory

Tzanck Smear for Herpes

Scraping from base of lesion, spread in monolayer on a labeled slide.  FIX IMMEDIATELY in 95% ETOH.

Air-dried smear or formalin fixation.

Urine

A second morning, voided specimen is suggested.  Specimen should be submitted in labeled, leak-proof container.  Specimen should be refrigerated in off hours.

 

Consultation On Outside Cases

Glass slides and a copy of the referring laboratory report.

The attending physician may directly request the necessary material from an outside laboratory or may call the Cytology Department at 315-410-7210.
