Phlebotomist

Schedule: 1st Shift - Full-Time

Position:  Full-Time Phlebotomist (7:30 am - 4:00 pm)

Location:  Syracuse, NY Region

POSITION DESCRIPTION:  

Under the general direction of the department manager/supervisor, the phlebotomist has regular contact with patients, hospital employees, physicians, pathologists, nursing personnel, visitors, laboratory personnel, and regulatory or accrediting agencies.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Interviews patient to obtain necessary demographic and insurance information.
  • Secures required signatures and consent forms.
  • Collects and processes appropriate blood specimens from patient.
  • Uses proper techniques.
  • Performs basic computer functions including entry of patient demographics and order entry of tests requested.
  • All other duties as requested.

EDUCATION: 

  • High School Diploma, required.  
  • 1 year of phlebotomy experience, highly preferred.
  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology and/or science courses, highly desirable.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND HAZARDS: 

The work environment is primarily a laboratory/draw station setting, but can vary based on assignment. Exposure to communicable diseases, bloodborne pathogens, toxic substances, and other conditions common to a healthcare environment.

  • Employee is regularly both stationary and required to move about from work station to station.
  • Frequently required to perform duties associated with the use of a computer and laboratory instruments;
  • Ability to grasp small objects and perform tasks associated with eye-hand coordination;
  • Ability to distinguish details of objects less than a few feet away and determine and detect difference between size, color, numbers, shades, and brightness, as well as differentiate sounds.
  • Frequently required to communicate with other staff and have the ability to frequently lift and maneuver up to 50 pounds.

SKILLS AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:  

  • Proven interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Valid New York State Driver’s License.
  • Excellent customer service skills and strong communication skills.
  • Ability to adapt to changing workload and stressful situations. 
  • Requires the use of equipment such as computer terminals, centrifuges, telephones, copiers and fax machines.
