ABOUT US: Laboratory Alliance is the area’s largest state-licensed laboratory, providing clinical and anatomic pathology testing to a 16-county region in Central New York. As the laboratory of choice for most local healthcare providers, more than 10 million tests are performed annually at our laboratories at our Operations Center in Liverpool and at Crouse Hospital in Syracuse, N.Y.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Laboratory Office Assistant is responsible for the proper handling and processing of incoming laboratory specimens for clinical diagnostic testing; Full-time with holiday and weekend rotations.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Receives and processes laboratory specimens according to department procedures and protocols
  • Verifies specimen information and ensures specimen integrity while performing processing duties and preparing specimens for testing
  • Enters patient demographic information into the Laboratory Information System
  • Enters test order data into the Laboratory Information System
  • Follows department procedures to identify and troubleshoot specimens that do not meet the laboratory's standard acceptance criteria
  • Ensures specimens are prepared and available at the appropriate testing area
  • Monitors and records storage temperatures in accordance with laboratory procedures
  • Maintains inter- and intradepartmental workflow by fostering a spirit of cooperation
  • Works collaboratively and supports efforts of team members
  • Communicates necessary job-related information with other shifts
  • Adheres to company's safety procedures, including infection control and hazardous waste policies and protocols
  • Maintains patient confidentiality by safeguarding Protected Health Information (PHI) and other confidential information
  • Maintains a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Contributes to team effort by performing duties outside the normal scope of work, as needed
  • Participates in alternate shift and weekend coverage, as needed

EDUCATION: High School or equivalent; Associate Degree in a science discipline, desirable; 0-1 year of laboratory experience; Knowledge common to a basic healthcare environment

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND HAZARDS: Exposure to communicable diseases, bloodborne pathogens, toxic substances and other conditions common to a healthcare environment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires prolonged standing, some walking and sitting, some bending, stooping and stretching; Eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity; Ability to distinguish letters, numbers and symbols; Use of computerized instruments, computer terminals, and other equipment common to a clinical laboratory; May require lifting up to 30 pounds or more

SPECIAL EQUIPMENT, SKILLS, OR OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Proven interpersonal and communication skills, ability to adapt to changing workload and stressful situations; Excellent customer service skills; Strong computer skills required for patient registration and order entry; May be required to use the following equipment: computer terminals, centrifuges, telephones, copiers.
